The Big Ten baseball tournament is at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha — the same venue that hosts the College World Series every June. For most of the teams in this bracket, that is either a nice preview or a pleasant backdrop. For UCLA, it's a different kind of weight. The Bruins spent thirteen straight weeks ranked No. 1 nationally, set the Big Ten record for conference wins in a season at 28, and arrived here as a program expected to be playing at this address again in three weeks under different circumstances.

USC spent Friday morning doing its part. The Trojans beat Michigan State 7-0 in the quarterfinals — a clean, professional win on a stage college baseball reserves for programs that have earned the right to perform on it.

Weather has been the other character in Omaha this week. Oregon and Washington had their quarterfinal postponed entirely to Saturday, which compresses the back half of the bracket and means the field won't have a full semifinal picture until the weekend. The Omaha weather isn't supposed to be a factor in June. In May it apparently is.

UCLA faces Purdue in the quarterfinals — 74.5 percent favorites per the pre-game model. Purdue earned their way here through the qualifier rounds, which is exactly the kind of path that occasionally produces a result the bracket didn't expect. Nebraska-Michigan is the fourth quarterfinal, with Nebraska entering as a substantial favorite.

The Bruins are the reason the Big Ten tournament has national-seeding implications rather than just a conference trophy. A clean UCLA run through Omaha this week locks up the No. 1 overall seed on Selection Monday and makes the top regional their home for the foreseeable postseason future. A stumble doesn't end their tournament — they're too deep in the at-large conversation for that — but it changes the bracket math for every team projected into their regional.

The weather pushed one quarterfinal to Saturday. The full semifinal bracket will be known by Saturday afternoon. Omaha has hosted higher-stakes versions of this tournament. This week is the qualifying round.
